Brass Fields is inspired by a local cattle farm I visited Winter, 2019. This farm has seen over 80 years ownership by the Deeg family. When we visited, the young calves were extremely curious, and all eyes were on the strange girls (being myself and my sister) entering their gates. The calves lined up in front of us, with the winter morning sun reflecting off of their multi-coloured coats. I wanted to capture the peach and cool aqua colours in the sky that day, along with those curious calves. There is an embroidered lavender-coloured border between the ground and sky representing the fence that surrounded the calf pen. At the time, the ground was muddy and covered in straw. I decided that the ground was a great space to bring a bold pattern into the painting. Using iridescent brass paint, along with several other warm colours, the ground resembles a quilt, as well as the birds-eye-view of Alberta’s canola, barley and wheat fields that surround this farm.
