The Windmill Farm is inspired by one of the farms near the town of Langdon, where I grew up. When I visited this farm last, it seemed to be abandoned, however, the windmill was blowing, making a very loud whistling sound. While the rest of the farm was silent and still, this windmill seemed to be the remaining voice on the farm. During the time I visited, there was a fresh blanket of snow on the ground, trees and what was left of the barn roof. When creating this painting, I chose to make the farm scene appear as a collaged image on top of a tartan plaid sky. The sky is made up of a soft red, blue and rust coloured plaid that references a warm blanket. I felt that a cold, abandoned farm deserved a blanket-like sky to commemorate the years prior that this farm must have been a source of shelter and was once loved by the family that built it.
